Transparent, semi-transparent or solid
This decision sets the next ten years of the deck, because it's close to one-directional — you can always go more opaque later, but going back the other way means stripping or sanding everything off.
- Transparent and semi-transparent show the grain and weather gracefully, but need recoating more often and won't hide a repair or a mismatched board.
- Semi-solid is the usual compromise on a deck with some history to it.
- Solid covers grain and repairs completely and lasts longest — but on a walking surface it can peel rather than fade, which is a worse failure to live with.
Moisture content, not the calendar
The most common deck-staining failure is coating wood that's still wet. A deck that has been washed needs days to dry through, not hours, and new pressure-treated lumber needs longer still before it will take a penetrating stain. Sealing moisture in gives you a finish that goes cloudy, peels in sheets and traps rot underneath. We work to how dry the wood actually is, not to what day it's.
The boards underneath come first
A deck that has gone a few years without sealer usually has work in it before any stain goes down: cupped or split boards, a soft spot where a planter sat, rails that have loosened, popped fixings. None of that's hidden by a coat of stain — it's emphasised by one. We deal with the wood first and tell you honestly if what you have is a repair job rather than a staining job.
