This choice lasts for years. You can always go darker later. Going lighter means sanding it all off.
- Clear and see-through stains show the wood grain. They need redoing more often and won't hide repairs.
- Semi-solid stain is a good middle choice for an older deck.
- Solid stain covers everything and lasts the longest. But on a floor you walk on, it can peel.
- Paint gives you any color you want and covers everything. Like solid stain, it can wear where people walk.
The wood has to be dry
The most common mistake is staining or painting wet wood. After washing, a deck needs a few days to dry, not a few hours. New pressure-treated wood needs even longer. Stain or paint on wet wood goes cloudy and peels. We wait until the wood is dry.
We fix the boards first
An older deck usually needs some repairs before staining or painting. Boards may be split or warped. Rails may be loose. Stain and paint won't hide any of that. It makes it stand out. So we fix the wood first. If your deck needs repairs more than stain, we'll tell you.
