This is the most common fence mistake around here. New pressure-treated wood is wet when the fence goes up. It needs months to dry before it can take stain. Stain put on too soon sits on top, looks blotchy and peels. Cedar can usually be stained much sooner. If your fence is too new, we'll tell you to wait. We won't take your money for a job that won't last.
Wind changes how we stain
Wichita is one of the windiest cities in the country. Your neighbor's yard, car and plants are right next to your fence. Spraying in the wind can put stain where it shouldn't go. So we spray the stain on, then brush it in. We do the sheltered parts on windy days. It takes longer, but the stain soaks into the wood.
Which stain lasts on a fence
Solid and semi-solid stains last the longest on a fence. They also hide color differences between old and new boards. See-through stain shows the cedar grain and looks great on a newer fence. But it needs redoing more often.
