Derby grew fast from the 1960s on. Many homes were built when pressed-wood siding, called hardboard, was the normal choice. That siding has one common problem. The bottom edge of each board soaks up water, swells, goes soft and comes apart. It shows first on the bottom row, under downspouts and behind bushes. If your thumbnail sinks into the bottom of a board, that board needs replacing. But it's usually only one or two sides of the house. Replacing those boards and painting the whole house is usually the smart choice.
