Hot-tyre pickup, and why floors fail
The classic epoxy failure is hot-tyre pickup: you park a car on a warm day, the tyres soften slightly, and when you pull off in the morning the coating lifts away with them in patches. It's almost never the epoxy that was at fault — it's a floor that was laid over a slab that had not been mechanically profiled, so nothing ever really keyed into the concrete. Acid etching, which is what the box kits tell you to do, doesn't open the surface reliably. Diamond grinding does. That's the whole reason a properly installed floor survives a Kansas summer and a kit floor doesn't.
What the preparation actually involves
Most of the time on a garage floor is spent before any color goes down:
- Clearing and degreasing the slab — oil spots have to come out, because epoxy won't bond through them.
- Diamond grinding the whole floor to an even profile.
- Checking the slab for moisture coming up from below. Older Wichita garages were often poured without a vapour barrier, and moisture pushing up will delaminate a coating from underneath.
- Filling cracks, pits and spalled patches, and treating the control joints.
- Only then the base coat, the flake or color, and the clear topcoat that does the actual wearing.

A garage floor here takes road salt through the winter, meltwater off the car, hot tyres through the summer and whatever gets dropped on it in between. That's exactly what the finish is for — it seals the concrete so salt and oil sit on top and wipe off rather than soaking in and staining.
